GPA Calculator (Cumulative & Semester)

Calculate your semester and cumulative GPA for Gulf universities on the 5.0, 4.0, or US 4.0 scale. Pick your university to set the grading scale automatically, or choose a scale manually, then enter credit hours and grades (as letters or points) to get your GPA and classification.

How to Use

  1. Pick your university from the search list to set the grading scale (5.0, 4.0, or US) automatically, or choose "My university isn't listed" and set the scale manually
  2. Choose whether to enter grades as letters (A, B+…) or as raw points
  3. Add each course with its credit hours and grade; use "+ Add course" for more rows
  4. For cumulative GPA, switch to "Cumulative" and enter your previous GPA and previous credit hours
  5. Read your GPA, classification, and total hours; in cumulative mode the semester GPA is shown separately

GPA Calculator for the 5.0 and 4.0 Scales of Gulf Universities

This tool computes your semester and cumulative GPA at Gulf universities — whether your school uses the 5.0 scale common at Saudi public universities, the 4.0 scale, or the US-style scale with plus/minus grades (A−, B+). GPA is a credit-weighted average: each course affects your GPA in proportion to its credit hours.

How is GPA calculated?

Semester GPA = the sum of (grade points × credit hours) across your courses ÷ total credit hours. Cumulative GPA blends your previous GPA and previous hours with the current semester the same way. Pick your university from the list and the grading scale is set automatically, so each grade's point value is applied for you.

Why do scales differ between universities?

The letter-to-points map is fixed per scale, but the classification bands (Excellent, Very Good…) can vary slightly between universities, especially on the 4.0 and US scales. The calculator shows the source for each scale and flags when the classification bands are approximate — check your university's regulations when you need an official figure.

Calculation Methodology

Credit-weighted average

GPA = the sum of (grade points × credit hours) for each course, divided by total credit hours. A course with more hours moves your GPA more. Blank rows are not counted, and rows with zero hours or no grade are excluded.

The 5.0 scale

Used at most Saudi public universities: A+ = 5.0, A = 4.75, B+ = 4.5, B = 4.0, C+ = 3.5, C = 3.0, D+ = 2.5, D = 2.0, and F = 1.0. Classification bands: Excellent ≥ 4.5, Very Good ≥ 3.75, Good ≥ 2.75, Pass ≥ 2.0.

The 5.0-scale quirk: F = 1.00

On the Saudi 5.0 scale a failing F is worth one point (1.00), not zero — unlike the 4.0 and US scales where F = 0.00. This makes a failure weigh more than a zero would; it is correct behaviour, not a calculation error.

The 4.0 and US scales

Saudi 4.0: A+ = 4.0 down to F = 0.0. The US scale uses plus/minus grades (A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3…) with F = 0.0. Classification bands on these two scales can vary between universities, so they are shown with an "approximate" flag when not confirmed against an official source.

Cumulative GPA

Cumulative GPA = (previous GPA × previous hours + current-semester points) ÷ (previous hours + current-semester hours). If your previous hours are zero, the cumulative equals the semester GPA.

Classification thresholds vary

Universities may apply slightly different classification thresholds than the standard values. Treat the calculator's result as indicative and check your university's study-and-exams regulations for the official classification.

Practical Examples

Semester GPA on the 5.0 scale

An A+ course worth 3 hours (5.0) and a B course worth 4 hours (4.0). GPA = (5×3 + 4×4) ÷ 7 = 31 ÷ 7 ≈ 4.43 out of 5 — a "Very Good" classification.

Cumulative GPA

Your previous GPA is 4.0 over 30 hours, then you add an A+ course worth 3 hours this semester. Cumulative = (4.0×30 + 5×3) ÷ 33 = 135 ÷ 33 ≈ 4.09 out of 5.

US scale (Oman/UAE)

An A− course worth 3 hours (3.7) and a B+ course worth 3 hours (3.3). GPA = (3.7×3 + 3.3×3) ÷ 6 = 21 ÷ 6 = 3.50 out of 4 (classification bands are approximate on this scale).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
GPA is a credit-weighted average: multiply each grade's points by the course's credit hours, sum that across all courses, then divide by total hours. In cumulative mode, enter your previous GPA and previous hours to blend them with the current semester. The calculator does this automatically once you pick a university or scale.
What is the difference between a 5.0 and a 4.0 GPA?
They are two different letter-to-points systems. The 5.0 scale is common at Saudi public universities and tops out at 5.0, while the 4.0 scale tops out at 4.0 and is used at some private and international universities. The numeric GPA differs between the two even for identical performance.
Why is F worth 1.00 and not zero on the 5.0 scale?
This is a distinctive feature of the Saudi 5.0 scale: a failing F is worth one point (1.00), not zero. On the 4.0 and US scales, F is worth zero (0.00). A failure therefore affects your GPA differently across scales, and the calculator applies the value of whichever scale you choose.
How do I convert my GPA from 5.0 to 4.0 or to 100?
There is no single exact linear conversion between the systems, because the point maps and thresholds differ. As a rough estimate some people divide a 5.0 GPA by 5 and multiply by 4 or by 100, but that won't necessarily match your university's method. A dedicated, accurate cross-scale converter is planned as a separate tool.
Does my university use the same scale?
Most Saudi public universities use the 5.0 scale, some private universities use the 4.0 scale, and most universities in Oman, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain use the US scale. Pick your university from the list if it is included; otherwise choose the scale manually. The list only includes universities whose scale is confirmed against an official source.
What do "Excellent" and "Very Good" mean?
The classification describes your GPA band. On the 5.0 scale: Excellent ≥ 4.5, Very Good ≥ 3.75, Good ≥ 2.75, Pass ≥ 2.0. These thresholds vary slightly between universities and scales, and the calculator shows a flag when the bands are approximate.
