Zakat al-Mal in Islam

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, obligatory on every Muslim whose wealth reaches the nisab and has been held for one lunar (Hijri) year.

Zakat Rate

The Zakat rate is 2.5% of total Zakatable wealth.

Nisab Threshold

Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold, equivalent to 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver.

Zakatable Assets

Includes: cash, bank savings, gold and silver, stocks and investments, business inventory, and receivable debts.

Calculation Methodology

Formula used

The calculator adds Zakatable assets such as cash, savings, gold, silver, stocks, business inventory, and expected receivables, then subtracts entered debts to estimate net Zakatable wealth. If the net amount reaches nisab, Zakat = net amount × 2.5%.

Nisab and holding period

The calculator uses either 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver as nisab, depending on your selection. You should also consider the completion of one Hijri year according to your Zakat date.

Calculation limits

The calculator does not resolve all scholarly differences, such as worn jewelry or long-term stock holdings. For large or complex assets, consult a trusted qualified authority.

Practical Examples

Simple Case — Cash and Gold with No Debts

Noura has: cash 80,000 SAR + bank savings 45,000 SAR + gold worth 30,000 SAR. Total assets = 80,000 + 45,000 + 30,000 = 155,000 SAR. No debts, so net Zakatable wealth = 155,000 SAR (above nisab). Zakat amount = 155,000 × 2.5% = 3,875 SAR.

Multiple Assets — With Debt Deduction

Mohammed has: cash 50,000 + savings 120,000 + stocks 75,000 + business inventory 40,000 = 285,000 SAR. He owes 25,000 SAR in debts. Net Zakatable wealth = 285,000 − 25,000 = 260,000 SAR. Zakat amount = 260,000 × 2.5% = 6,500 SAR.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is nisab calculated in 2026?
Nisab equals the value of 85 grams of 24K gold. At July 2026 gold prices (around SAR 495/gram for 24K), nisab is approximately SAR 42,000. The silver nisab (595 grams) is around SAR 4,300. Always check the gold price on the day you calculate Zakat, as it fluctuates daily.
Is Zakat due on the house I live in?
No, Zakat is not due on your primary residence as it is considered a basic personal need. However, if you own property intended for sale or investment, Zakat applies to it as a trade asset.
Can I deduct debts before calculating Zakat?
Yes, according to the majority of scholars, current debts due for payment may be deducted from total Zakatable wealth. For long-term debts like a mortgage, some scholars allow deducting only the current year's installments.
Is Zakat paid on salary monthly or annually?
Zakat is an annual obligation due after one full lunar (Hijri) year has passed since your wealth reached nisab. A practical approach is to pick a fixed date each year (e.g., Ramadan) and calculate Zakat on all wealth held on that date.
How is Zakat on stocks calculated?
If stocks are held for active trading, Zakat is 2.5% of their market value. If held as long-term investments, Zakat is 2.5% of your share of the company's Zakatable assets (cash, inventory, and receivables).
What is the difference between Zakat al-Mal and Zakat al-Fitr?
Zakat al-Mal is 2.5% of wealth that has reached nisab and been held for one year. Zakat al-Fitr is a fixed charity due at the end of Ramadan — approximately 3 kg of staple food per person — regardless of wealth level.
Is Zakat due on gold jewelry worn regularly?
Scholars differ on this. The majority (Maliki, Shafi'i, and one Hanbali view) hold that jewelry worn regularly for personal adornment is exempt. The Hanafi school and some scholars require Zakat on all gold reaching nisab (85g). Paying Zakat on it is the safer position.
