Profit Margins in Business
Profit margins are the most important financial health indicators for any business. Three key levels:
Gross Profit Margin
Gross Profit = Revenue – Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)
Measures production efficiency and direct cost management.
Operating Profit Margin
Operating Profit = Gross Profit – Operating Expenses
Measures overall operational efficiency before taxes.
Net Profit Margin
Net Profit = Operating Profit – Taxes & Zakat
The true bottom line — what reaches shareholders or gets reinvested.
Calculation Methodology
Gross margin
The calculator computes gross profit = revenue − cost of goods sold, then gross margin = gross profit ÷ revenue × 100.
Operating and net profit
Operating profit = gross profit − operating expenses. Net profit = operating profit − entered taxes and Zakat.
Analysis limits
The calculator does not classify expenses automatically or validate accounting treatment. Use figures from your financial statements or internal records for a useful reading.
Practical Examples
Restaurant in Riyadh
Mohammed's restaurant earns SAR 120,000/month in revenue, with COGS of SAR 42,000, operating expenses SAR 48,000, and taxes SAR 7,500. Gross profit = 120,000 - 42,000 = SAR 78,000 (65% margin). Operating profit = 78,000 - 48,000 = SAR 30,000 (25% margin). Net profit = 30,000 - 7,500 = SAR 22,500 (18.75% margin).
Online Store
Fatima runs an online store with SAR 85,000 revenue, SAR 35,000 COGS, SAR 22,000 operating expenses, and SAR 3,500 in taxes. Gross profit = 85,000 - 35,000 = SAR 50,000 (58.82% margin). Operating profit = 50,000 - 22,000 = SAR 28,000 (32.94% margin). Net profit = 28,000 - 3,500 = SAR 24,500 (28.82% margin).
